For Black Women hair is such a complicated thing. And it really shouldn't be, we've just had years of bullshit lingering in our brains convincing us to do unnatural things to our hair. I've had my ups and downs with it over the years. I haven't had a relaxer in about five years but I rock my weave. Actually, I love my weave. However, I let my own hair breathe for a week and wore it natural. How freeing! How simple, funky, edgy, and classic! I'm attempting to break into, oh how should I put this...mainstream movie and tv projects so I went back to the weave. They match my current headshots. But I'm thinking of getting some pics taken while the hair is au natural so when I give it a break again (perhaps for longer), I can have a few different "looks". Here are some pics I took of me in my natural state (BF looooves the natural hair, by the way):

Now compare that with my headshots featuring la extensions (and a fair amount of makeup/ touching up, etc.)- big difference, right?

i've always loved tie dye but in the last year or so, i've been particularly drawn to it. i like that it's splattered paint basically which reminds me of graffiti. i hadn't seen it but when i heard about proenza schouler doing tie dye this season i was intriuged but not THAT intrigued. after all, it's tie dye. not exactly a groundbreaking achievement for fashion in 2010. but i paid a visit to my favorite store opening ceremony and there it was. PS tie dye and my god, it looked amazing. so fresh and excited hanging there in bright bold colors. so pretty and fun. i'm glad i saw it because it makes me even more excited that i got this lil' number from american apparel.

you can't tell but it's actually a leotard or unitard or whatever but with shorts. a onesie, let's say.

my mom gave me this necklace for christmas. i love african inspired jewelry. i can't wait to go there some day.

wow. has it really been two months since i've updated this blog? well, a lot has happened in those months. i was in a great play, went to the UK (london, dublin, glasgow) for a week, then to vegas for a weekend. i've also been working out like a crazy person, submitting myself for more projects, writing and hopefully shooting some pretty cool ideas i have. i've also done some shopping. a LOT of shopping. what else is new, right?

while walking around Santee Alley (if you're a New Yorker, Santee Alley is the equivalent to Canal St.) with my mom, i picked up this flowy top and was hoping that I'd find these glasses because of the insane amount of knock-off shit they have down there. i actually saw a girl with them on and asked if she had gotten them there at the Alley. she hadn't but last week while I was doing the rounds in my 'hood, i went into Maya and there they were in all their fake-ass glory. And for $8 i couldn't pass it up.

you know what's funny? i've always fantasized about being an art project. the subject. the muse. and yet, my shyness...or yet, my unwillingness to allow myself to go there, has prevented me to present myself as thus. no more. what i love about how this blog is how much more honest it had become. more real. more raw. there is a part of me that is so upbeat and so in tune to what the masses would consider acceptable but then there is the other side. perhaps, the more real side. a bit dark and interested in all fashions black, all music moody (portishead, massive attacck, goldfrapp, etc.), and all stories raw and graphic. so. at the risk of coming off pretentious (there's that second guessing again), i present a series of self portraits.

the bad news is that my hair stylist is moving to nyc. the good news is she was selling a bunch of her stuff and i scored a capricorn coffee mug (for mom) for fifty cents and this necklace for a dollar.

impulsiveness at target led me to purchase this watch. i've been wanting a men's watch for a while but until the rolex money starts rolling in, i'll settle for this. i mean, it looks good to me. had the sweet man at the repair shop take out a few links and now i can't take it off.

thank god for refinery29. without it i would not have known about the row sample sale yesterday in culver city. i'm intrigued by the olsens. they have great style and from what i had seen online, the clothes, especially the row, seemed betutifully tailored and quite luxe. i was fully prepared to leave the showroom empty handed if i wasn't moved but i was. everything is so well made, so soft and comfortable. i was one of the first there so i had my pick. i left the $200-$300 pieces alone but managed to snag a few great $30-$50 items. i got four pieces total but here are two:

the basic black tank dress. it's very long and like i said, beyond comfortable.

back of the dress. worn with leotard from american apparel.

layered with a white tank, also the row. threw on this amazing necklace from my grandmother. she's been hooking me up with some great stuff lately, am i right?

The harbor near the hotel. Sweden is comprised of thousands of islands, so there's water and boats a plenty.

Live From Sweden!

Sweden has totally lifted my spirits. It's amazing how doing what you love can make the world feel so much better. Stockholm is a wonderful and vibrant city crawling with gorgeous people and beautiful old buildings. This morning I got up and went for a walk around this harbor right across from the hotel and walked along cobblestone streets watching people walk and bike to work. It was magical. My whole life, I've dreamed of traveling and I feel so blessed to be doing it.

But what's really important is...SHOPPING. Naturally. A person as broke as I am has no business doing any kind of shopping but c'mon, now. It's Stockholm! One of the most fashionable cities in the world! I'll have more pics soon but for now check out what I got at H&M. You know, I've been reading a LOT of nasty comments on some of my favorite blogs. Why can't people just let others live? Specifically, there have been a lot of comments to the effect of, "Ummm...we're in a RECESSION!", "You're so superficial!", "Wow, must be nice to have so much" , and on and on. Look people, fashion blogs are about just that- FASHION. It's an art form. It's something we all love and crave. Wanting to have pretty things is not some new idea that was just invented. Dressing Up...My Feet

Quick post with bad pictures. After I wrapped today (one more day of shooting then we're done!), I went to Barney's to check on something for my awesome boyfriend. Barney's is in the midst of their big sale so of course I had to play around a bit, knowing full well that even on sale, I can't afford anything there. I was exhausted and didn't feel like trying on a bunch of clothes but I had no problem trying on shoes.

Balenciaga. I really love this color. I got some new shoes in this color that I will share soon. Oh and that strap at the top of my ankle...velcro! Pretty awesome. There's a bit of my shoes- Steve Madden t-strap sandals. One of my favorite pairs of shoes, actually.

Dries Van Noten. Not 100% my style but man, they are beautiful.

No, I'm still not over these Stella's. After that Bebe debacle, of course I had to see if the real ones are as comfortable as everyone claims. They are. So comfortable in fact, I actually considered plunking down $599 (down from $995) for this pair even though they are not the color I wanted. Sigh...I guess I'll keep dreaming.

I'm a horrible blogger, aren't I? Well, I haven't been posting recently because, like the last time I was away, I am involved with an amazing project. It's a short film with an great script and I'm in love with my character. Yesterday during the shoot,I was able to access certain emotions that have been so hard for me to reach when working. Whew...it's been a while. There's been so much crap I've been trying to sort out in my head, I haven't been thinking about this blog. And while I could say that there have been more important things going on than shopping...well, that would be a lie. In fact I've picked a couple of really fantastic things and I'm long overdue for an outfit post. Anyway, on to a subject I've been thinking about for a while. Knockoffs. I had a very interesting conversation with the stylish sales associates at Confederacy last weekend about knockoffs and what they thought of them. It was pointed out that it's very hard for designers to be completely original and that fashion borrows from many, many sources. Recently DVF has come under fire for allegedly copying a bed jacket design from a independent label called Mercy but it seems that the issue has been worked out.

I used to buy knockoffs all the time in NYC. I would go down to Chinatown and buy myself Prada (my friend would call them "Pradon't"), Louis Vuitton, and others. Remember the Christian Dior Saddle Bag that was all the rage? Yeah, I had that too. I stopped after a while because let's face it, it's super tacky. Also, the knockoff trade is rife with child labor/abuse and is a horrible business. However, I recently purchased a knockoff of these:

The Stella McCartney Mesh sandal. Retail price $995. Can't afford them. However, I can afford these:

My hands trembled, hovering over my keyboard when I discovered these on the Bebe website. Could it be? Oh my god, they look JUST LIKE THE STELLAS! I called the Bebe at the Beverly Center. I put them on hold and booked it over there after work. I slipped them on, had a weird sensation on my feet but bought them anyway. I was happy as a clam. Let me tell you something...they are the MOST. UNCOMFORTABLE. SHOES. EVER. And I can't help but wonder if I would have the same problem with the originals.

In keeping with the same theme and to call back to my obsessive vest collecting, I picked this up in a vintage shop:

No, of course I'm not saying A. Wang copied the pattern from a Cache vest but there's no denying how similar the pattern is. Maybe designers can't be 100% original, 100% of the time. Does that mean we should fault the companies who try to make certain styles accessible to the public? I bring this up because it really polarizes people who feel strongly about fashion trends. Those (myself included) who shop at F21, H&M and others must realize that we are buying knockoffs and understand where it came from. But I also think the fashion snobs should stop going on and on about how it hurts the designers. They are two different markets. I respect and appreciate a designers vision and when it's blatantly ripped off as is the case of the Stella shoes, then yes- it is off putting. Especially when the quality is so shabby. At the same time, my intentions were pure when I bought the Bebe shoes. Of course I would much rather have the originals but until I win the lottery, knockoffs are as close as I can get. However...I plan on returning them. They're so poorly made that I'll never wear them. Hmmm...maybe I should have just saved up.

There certainly is a whole lotta hoopla over V Magazine. I must confess that this mag was not on my radar until I started obsessively reading fashion blogs. So the great fashion photographer, Mario Testino, has done a kick ass swimsuit issue featuring the world's best supermodels. I was intrigued by the pics but I was also curious about the magazine as a whole. I wandered over to the website and OMG....beautiful, arresting images that I must hold in my hand. After work, it is straight to the killer magazine stand on Cahuenga Blvd. to pick up a copy and add to the collection. In the meantime, have some eye candy.

Naomi Campbell is the world's best supermodel. I didn't say world's best human being. But her job? Yeah, she's good at it.

This little faux number was purchased at H&M. On a recent episode of The Hills, one girl said to another, "You look like a dog, you're wearing fur!" I thought that was pretty funny.

I've been spending more time in Silverlake lately. It's such a beautiful neighborhood. As long as I live in LA, I never want to leave the Los Feliz/Silverlake area. It's just too amazing. I found out last year that Anais Nin lived in Silverlake and I almost lost my mind. She lived in a one bedroom house designed by Eric Lloyd Wright, son of Frank. This house is exactly what I envision my dream house to be. I'm on a mission to find it. It's not listed anywhere which leads me to believe that it's a private residence.

Warm and Snuggly

Since my day job is in an office, I don't want to go to work 100% of the time. My bed is so soft and comforting and when I get dressed, a lot of time I want to take that feeling out into the world. Such is this case this morning. L.A. weather has been weird lately and the temp has been cool in the morning. I decided to break out this oatmeal sweater that I got at one of my favorite vintage stores- Cherry Pick Vintage on Franklin Ave. in Los Feliz. Every time I'm in there, I manage to find something very special. This dress is from Cherry Pick as well.

This sweater is straight up 80s. Big billowy sleeves and extra fabric around the neck. It's so comfortable and warm. I piled on the jewelery as well, just to keep it interesting.

A splash of colour is always good. I love my hot pink toe nails but it's time for a fresh pedi. Rule #1 of wearing open toes is to have your toenails looking right. I break this rule often.

I haven't posted anything on living spaces which is odd because I'm constantly thinking of ways to improve my own. When I have a house I want it to have a dark/ Gothic/ Victorian/ Catholic Church/ bohemian vibe. I have no idea how I could possibly put something like that together (I know nothing about interior design) but I know that's what I want. The BF, on the other hand just wants a basement so he can watch his sports and play his guitar and drums. Peep the details from Miss Cho's place:

The outside. Love the arched doorways and windows. There's also that big gold thing. It really reminds me of a church.

Religious art. I collect religious candles and rosaries. I'd love to add a crucifix or two to the mix.

Stain glass windows!!! I have always wanted stain glass in my home ever since I went to a party in Spanish Harlem in an apartment that used to be a church. I am so not religious (I was forced into Catholicism when I was twelve) but the aesthetic has definitely stayed with me. Such strong emotion conveyed in the artwork. You should have seen me at the Baroque exhibit at the Getty a few months ago. I cried the whole time.

Here's a stand-by work ensemble. I have this dress in black and purple and it's pretty versatile. Eh...I don't know. I was crazy about this beige one when I bought it but I'm on the fence about it nowadays. I've actually rocked the black one in a really cool way so I'll post that at some point. I love the flats- I have a thing for snakeskin and I need more in my life.

Something about this dress feels French to me. Maybe a bit...Chanel? I don't know. To be honest I don't know that I could necessarily id a Chanel, unless it was the suit. Either way, I love this dress and the shoes (which you can't really see) are a recent purchase from the Fee People website.**

Two of my favorite colors came together in the form of the coveted Alexander McQueen for Target dress I managed to get my hands on. I think I mentioned a few posts ago about how obsessed I was with the dress. I went to Target on the wrong day so I wasn't able to find the dress initially. It was online but I really wanted to try it on- you just never know how stuff like this will fit. After calling around a few other Targets, I ended up speaking to a lovely young lady who knew exactly what dress I wanted and held it for me. My lovely BF went to pick it up (I was at work). And now, I model it for you:

One of the things that have enjoyed most about reading fashion blogs is the inspiration and information you get. It can be overwhelming at times but it also encourages you to get off your lazy ass and do something. I've been fortunate enough to have discovered Sea of Shoes, Six Six Sick, Rackk and Ruin, and my absolute favorite, Luxirare. These girls teach me something new every single day and I hope they realize how inspiring they are to me. You guys are awesome!

So, now that that ass kissing is done :) on to how they inspired me today...well, yesterday actually. I was never into the menswear thing. I felt that it didn't work for me because I have so many curves. In college, I did dress up as a man for Halloween. I found a grey pinstripe Calvin Klein suit that fit perfectly, I paired it with a bowler hat and a cigar and that was Halloween. My BF at the time was against it but in the end, he ended up being very turned on by the whole thing. Go figure. Anyway, I found this blazer at the Goodwill on Hollywood Blvd. in my neighborhood. I wore it with my current BF's grey Calvin button down and I really like it. It looks like something my Dad would have worn to a meeting in the 80s.

God, I hate to do this...I really, REALLY hate to do this! This pic is SO bad, it's not even funny. I threw it together one day a few weeks ago and thought, "Wow, this looks great!" I snapped a pic with my phone in the ladies room of my office. Poor, poor quality and hello? I'm in a BATHROOM!! Anyway, here it is:

I'm wearing my new favorite dress (vintage) with a vint belt, leggings, and heels from a few posts ago. What I love about this look is that it's fun, whimsical, but still fashionable. I think the whole thing, shoes included, is less than $100 which is also key. I've learned to work within my budget, dress for my shape and take chances. It's been great so far.

Grrrrr!!! Target.com SCREWED me BIG TIME!!

Ok, let me collect myself. I heard that Alexander McQueen was doing a line for Target so naturally I was very, very excited. I read in Nylon that the line was to debut March 1. A couple of other publications (NY Mag, I think) also reported this information. I kept checking the Target website and it said that the line actually debuted today, March 4. I thought it was strange but figured that maybe March 1 was when it debuted in NY. So...because I missed Stella and got there too late for Commes de Garcon at H&M, I was determined to get my hands on the McQ line. Specifically this:

I got to Target in West Hollywood this morning, just before 8:30 a.m. When I got to the McQueen section, I found six other women picking over maybe 15 items. They all looked puzzled. I was annoyed. I thought that I had missed the boat by not getting there at 8 a.m. when the store opened. The dress and jacket were nowhere to be found. I grabbed three items and hustled to the fitting room thinking that I might be able to find some leftovers. A woman in front of me asked if there was any more McQ "in the back". The put upon employee said, "It was all in the store on the first. That's why there's nothing left." I could have cried. WHY DO I ALWAYS MISS THESE THINGS?! Anyway, none of the three items worked but there was another outfit that someone had left behind on the fitting room racks. I haven't been able to find a pic online but maybe I'll model it for ya. It's actually pretty cool. A long blue tee underneath a netted vest. It would look good with leggings and my new boots. I may be SOL with the dress and jacket, unless I go by Target religiously and see if anyone had made any returns. Not sure if the line will be avail online. Oh well.

Fashion blogs have been a huge inspiration lately. They've opened my eyes to a whole world of cutting edge designers that you don't see covered on E or other silly celebrity show that does the whole "fashion police" bullshit. I've also attempted a DIY project that didn't quite pan out (more on that later). I'm going to give it another shot, though. Anyway, I LOVE these boots and have a tendency to strut whenever I wear them. The $109 I spent on them didn't break the bank and I know I'll have them forever. Let's hear it for bargains!

A few things...

1. I grew up in Atlanta but do not consider myself "Southern".
2. With the exception of Dolly, I do not enjoy country music.
3. I love these boots even though they have a sad story attached to them.

I acquired these beauties in late '07. My father and I went by a yard sale that his friend's soon to be ex-wife was holding in their front yard. There was all sorts of crap laying about on the yard. Old toys, books, dishes, etc. This couple was selling everything and going their separate ways. The wife looked tired and was anxious to get rid of everything. I browsed around and saw these boots, tags still attached. I would never buy cowboy boots on my own but I figured that they would be a good staple to have. I slipped them on and they fit perfectly. She let me have them for free. I wear them under jeans, I don't do the cowboy boots and dress thing. It's been done, it doesn't look right on me (too hipster), and I hate it. But the old fashioned way I love. Just like the cowboys do it.

New Love

I'm having fun with bracelets lately. Today, I'm doing some light stacking with a Lucite piece I found in a random boutique on 9th Ave. in NYC, a Chrome Hearts piece (Christmas gift from BB) and a new bracelet from Maya on Hollywood Blvd.

Here's a close-up of the bracelet from Maya. Can't really tell by the pic (damn you, BlackBerry) but it's made up tiny skulls and claw like fingers.

I love edgy jewelry mixed in with a low key outfit. I'm wearing all black today and it seems to be working. I was feeling a little Goth today although I'm sure true Goths would scoff at my interpretation.

I have to say, as horrendous as 90s fashion could be, whoever styled The Party for this album cover did a pretty good job. And while I question the decision to have both Damon and Albert wear the same vests (Albert's is more Afro-centric, naturally), I'm loving the leather jacket draped around DeeDee's shoulders. Hotness. Tiffini's hat is Blossom chic and I think putting readhead Chase in a red blazer (coat?) works surprisingly well. Haha! Am I really breaking down The Party's style?! Wait...I think I'm having a flashback.

I lusted after a $209 version of this ring until eagle-eyed Bethany spied the $16 version at Urban in Santa Barbara. The cheaper one isn't gold, natch, but I love it anyways. I'm wearing it forever or until my finger turns green, whichever happens first ;)

You wear them all day but there's a minimal amount of walking around. I love these boots- they look like the Marni ones I've been eyeing on net-a-porter.com except they didn't cost over 1K. Score!

3. Shower and Nair, uh..."down there". I refuse to wax. REFUSE.
